What to expect

Paediatric chiropractic treatment is very different to adult treatments, we use a range of gentle, light techniques that are performed in a comfortable position, being held by a parent, or while your child is playing. We keep our treatment tailored to your child’s developing spine and nervous system.

After treatment, we will provide you with some age-appropriate exercises/advice or activities to support your child’s development at home, as well as answer any additional questions you may have.

To schedule your child’s first appointment book an appointment online or call us on (02) 9948 2826.

The Initial Consult

During your child’s first chiro appointment, we will start by:

  • Discussing your child’s health history in detail
  • Listening to your specific concerns and goals for treatment
  • Asking about birth history, developmental milestones, sleep patterns, and other relevant health information
  • Explaining how paediatic chiropractic care works and answer any question you may have.

We will then conduct an assessment which will vary slightly to your child’s needs.  Paediatric evaluations are adapted to be gentle, fun, and age-appropriate. Depending on your child’s age, the assessment may include:

  • Gentle observation of primitive reflexes and movement patterns.

  • Assessment of muscle tone and joint mobility

  • Evaluation of cranial shape and movement

  • Checking for signs of tongue or lip ties that might affect feeding

Signs that your child may benefit from chiropractic

  • Asymmetry in crawling or walking patterns
  • Difficulty with coordination or balance
  • Delayed achievement of movement milestones
  • Difficulty sleeping
  • Postural concerns
  • Complaints of pain/discomfort during particular movements
  • Decreased performance in previously enjoyed activities

We aim to create a calm, relaxed environment for both parents and children.

Every child is different, so each assessment is tailored to their age and needs. Our priority is to make the process gentle, engaging, and stress-free.

For infants, the assessment may include:

  • Observation of primitive reflexes and movement patterns
  • Assessment of muscle tone and joint mobility
  • Evaluation of cranial shape and movement
  • Screening for tongue or lip ties affecting feeding

For toddlers and older children, the assessment may include:

  • Observation of posture and general movement
  • Simple balance and coordination activities
  • Range of motion checks through games
  • Assessment of primitive reflex integration

We adapt to your child’s temperament — whether they’re shy, energetic, or somewhere in between.

Primitive reflexes are automatic, involuntary movements present at birth that help with early survival and development.

As the brain matures, these reflexes should naturally integrate (disappear) within the first year of life, making way for more advanced voluntary movement and higher brain function.

If primitive reflexes remain active beyond their expected timeline (known as retained primitive reflexes), they may contribute to:

  • Balance and coordination challenges
  • Fine and gross motor skill difficulties
  • Sensory processing concerns
  • Focus and attention challenges
  • Reading or writing difficulties
  • Emotional regulation issues

When appropriate, we incorporate specific activities into care plans to support reflex integration.
